The Stone Mill
&
The Sandwich Historical Society
Open Sundays 1:00 - 4:00, April lst through Sept.30.
The Stone Mill or the Sandwich Steam Mill as it was originally called was built in 1856. By 1858 it was producing 100 barrels of flour a day and had become an integral part of the Sandwich commerce. Over the next 27 years the mill changed owners several times but continued to thrive.
On April 9th, 1883, a disasterous fire swept through the building. Leaving only the stone walls and chimney standing. It was rebuilt better than ever. In 1891 an 80 h.p. steam engine was installed to replace the smaller 65 h.p. engine. But times were changing and business was faultering and soon the mill closed. It was never used as a mill again.
In the early 1900's the building was used for manufacturing repair parts for farm equipment, windmills and piping. James Knights later purchased the building. In 1959 the west portion of the mill was removed to permit the erection of the new fire station. As the James Knights Co. was about to merge with C.T.S. Corp. in late 1964, the Stone Mill was deeded to the Sandwich Historical Society to be used as a museum.
The building itself holds much important Sandwich history. Now as the Sandwich Historical Society's home, it holds antiques, tools of yesteryear, local historical photos and memorabilia which have been donated by DeKalb, Co. residents.
